Court Remands Cultists For illegal Possession Of Gun

Two members of the Aiye confraternity on Tuesday were remanded in Kirikiri Correctional centre by an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court sitting in Lagos for alleged illegal possession of guns.

The police charged a technician, Akeem Oyedele, 31, and Friday Ereze, 21, a stylist with conspiracy, belonging to an unlawful society and illegal possession of gun.

Magistrate A.S Odusanya, who did not take the suspects plea, directed the police to return the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice, and adjourned the case until February 9, for the DPP’s advice.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Emmanuel Ajayi, told the court that Messrs Oyedele and Ereze and others at large committed the offence on October 22 at 10:40 p.m. at Igbogbo, Ikorodu, Lagos.

He said that the men also belong to an unlawful society known as “Aiye” confraternity, and that they were armed with dangerous weapons with intent to commit felony to wit robbery.

The prosecutor said that when questioned, they were unable to provide a satisfactory account of why they were with dangerous weapons.

He said the offence contravened sections 42 and 330 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which provides for three years jail term for belonging to an unlawful society and seven years for unlawful possession of gun respectively.
