Some schools in Owerri, the Imo State capital,on Monday, shut down abruptly and asked their students to return home over an alleged threat by unknown gunmen to attack them.
According to report, parents were seen anxiously taking their children home.
Some of the school proprietors who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they had to shut down their schools because of a letter allegedly written by the gunmen, which went viral on social media.
According to them, the letter stated that there would no longer be movement, and schools will shut down every Monday of the week in Igbo land.
“There would be an attack on any school that fails to obey such an order,” they quoted the letter as saying.
It was also gathered that there were few human and vehicular movements in Owerri, on Monday.
Some residents of the state capital said last week’s attacks on police stations and buildings of individuals have frightened thr people and are part of the reasons they decided to stay at home.
