APC NWC Decides On Zoning, Mode Of Primaries

Members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will wait for some time to know the mode of primaries for picking candidates into the various offices.

A pronouncement on the zoning will also be made in the days ahead, spokesman of the party Felix Morka stated yesterday.

Speaking after the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, Morka said the decision will be taken by the National Working Committee (NWC), which will in the next 90 days exercise the power of the National Executive Committee (NEC).

According to him, the two issues were not deliberate upon at yesterday’s NEC meeting.

The spokesman said: “At our meeting today (yesterday) we did not make any decision on the mode of primaries.

“I have read a few reports that suggested that we already made a decision on that, but I can tell you that there was nothing like that.

“What I can say is that the NWC with the new powers ceded to it should be making such decisions in the coming days”. He spoke on Channels Television.

Morka said: “The president was laying out some principles that should govern the process.  Some of those issues are fairness, inclusion and allowing those who mean well for the country the opportunity to vie for the ticket.

“But, I don’t think the President did specify. I don’t think the President would do that.

“At this stage, we prefer expressed discussions and decisions and we cannot be trying to make meaning of anyone’s body language.

“I can confirm to you that the issue of consensus was not on the agenda at the NEC meeting today.

On zoning, he said that was not discussed.

“The issues that were before the NEC today (yesterday) was the motion to devolve NEC powers to NWC for the period of 90 days. And the other was the schedule of activities. There was no conversation on consensus.”

He added: “NEC decided to cede those powers to NWC because we are now in the period of engagement when decisions will have to be made rapidly.

“NEC of any party is not something you convene everyday or every week. That body can only be called as provided for in the party’s constitution.

“NEC granted those powers to the NWC to enable it function optimally in the conduct of our primaries”.

Before the convention that led to the election of the Abdullahi Adamu-led NWC, the party decided that all positions zoned to the North in 2015, are to be zoned to the South and vice versa.

With the election of Senator Adamu as Chairman, it is expected that the standard bearer will be from the South.
