Oluwo, DPO Collaborate, Sensitize Police Officers On Human Rights, Gender Based Violence

As part of the effort tailored at decimating human rights abuse by the police, the Paramount Ruler of Iwoland, HIM Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, in collaboration with the Nigerian Police Force, Iwo Division Headquarters, has sensitized the police officers on human rights and gender based violence.

The sensitization which was held at Oluwo’s palace in Iwo today targeted at eradicating human rights abuse and foster better relationship between the police and the host community.

Oluwo described policemen as servants whose country’s existence and survival are products of their unalloyed service to the nation. He said not many Nigerians are patriotic as the police who leave their family to protect the nation.

While Oluwo enjoined police to respect human dignity and freedoms as ensrhined in the constitution, he equally admonished citizens to understand the plights of these uniform men who leave their children to secure others.

He said the frustration before police officers is enormous and should be undeesstanble by common men, beseeching civilians to manage police work overload.

He therefore tasjed the federal government to consider recruiting more policemen to meet the increasing demand of Nigeria’s population.

In his reaction, the area commander for the district, ACP Omololu said the police brutality is against the law, urging policemen to respect the freedom of every innocent people until proven otherwise by the court. He said no officer that’s the right to torture or beat any accused.

He appealed to civilians to eschew jungle justice, saying it’s barbaric and not helping police investigation.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for Iwo division,Mr. Adekunle Ige, said the police under the watch of the IGP accord people their right as shall continue to be sustained by his officers. He assured Oluwo and the host community of their preparedness to respect human rights as ensrhined in the constitution. He said neither the IGP of police nor Osun State Commissioner of Police condone human rights abuse. He enjoined Oluwo to sustain the police-palace- community (PPC) interaction to foster the existing peaceful coexistence I’m the town.

In attendance at the sensitization event were the princes, Chiefs, area commander, Iwo DPO and community leaders.
