The Police State Command in Niger has reportedly recaptured one of the inmates identified as kazeem Murtala who escaped during the attack on the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja.
Mr Wasiu Abiodun, the state PPRO stated this in a statement.
He said a patrol team on surveillance between the General Hospital, Suleja, and Bakassi, arrested the inmate on July 9 at 8:30pm.
Terrorists had last week attacked the Kuje Correctional facility in Abuja. Over 900 inmates including Book Haram suspects escaped during the attack.
Abiodun explained that based on credible intelligence, the police patrol team arrested the inmate at an unidentified compound.
“During interrogation, the inmate confessed that he escaped from Kuje Custodial Center during the attack and had been in custody for two years for an offence he committed,” he said.
Speaking, Niger State Commissioner of Police, Monday Kuryas, commended the efforts of the patrol team.
Kuryas directed that the inmate should be handed back to the custodial centre.
The CP urged residents to continue to support the police with reliable information that could aid in apprehending other suspected criminals and to combat crime and criminality in the state.
Also, the Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), revealed that it arrested a Boko Haram suspect, Suleiman Sidi, who escaped from Kuje Correctional Center during last week’s terror attack.
Mr Femi Babafemi, the agency PRO stated this in a statement, on Monday.
He said the suspect was arrested while trying to board a vehicle heading for Borno from a park located in Area 1, Abuja.
According to him, three wraps of cannabis were found on him when he was searched.
The statement reads partly;
“The fleeing terror suspect, Suleiman Sidi, was arrested in the early hours of Monday, 11th July, at Area 1 motorpark, in the Federal Capital Territory while attempting to board a commercial vehicle to Maiduguri, Borno State.
“During preliminary interview, the wanted terror suspect confimed he was remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre for terrorism and robbery charges, adding that he was indeed one of the inmates who escaped from the facility last Tuesday.
“While commending the officers and men of the FCT Command of the Agency for the arrest and their vigilance, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), has directed that the wanted suspect should be immediately handed over to the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS,”
