One Died, Others Injured As Truck Rammes Into Market, Palace In Osun

At least One person was killed while some others were reportedly injured when a truck loaded with granite rammed into a market and a palace in Ikirun, the headquarters of Ifelodun Local Government Area of Osun State.

The accident occurred around 1:30pm on Monday when the truck emerged from Obaagun end of Ila/Ikirun road and was descending the slope towards Akinrun of Ikurun’s palace gate.

In an attempt to salvage the situation, the driver of the truck made efforts to stop the truck, but all to no avail, as the vehicle ran over everything on its path until it eventually stopped at the entrance to the palace.

A commercial motorcyclist identified as Mukaila Okedowo, was crushed to death by the truck while an unspecified number of other commuters were also injured, and some vehicles, goods were said to have been damaged in the accident.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Osun state command, Kehinde Adeleke, blamed it on overspeeding.

“Around 13:35hrs, a truck loaded with granite had a brake failure at Oja-Oba in Ikirun and claimed one life identified as Mukaila Okedowo, an Okada rider. Also, many people sustained various degrees of injuries while many cars were also affected,” Adeleke said.

“Operatives of NSCDC, NPF and FRSC were deployed to evacuate the remains of the dead to the mortuary, while victims were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.”
