The acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) in Nigeria, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive instructing all police convoys across the country to strictly adhere to traffic regulations.

The order was conveyed during a meeting on Monday at the Force headquarters, where IGP Egbetokun addressed Mobile Police Squadron and Commanders.

Emphasizing the importance of law enforcement officials being exemplars of the law, IGP Egbetokun highlighted the need for police officers to respect and comply with traffic laws. He stated, “Let me end this speech by reminding you that those who keep the peace must be the epitome of peace. Those whose duty it is to enforce the laws of the land must themselves respect and obey the laws of the land. Without obeying the laws, the Police lack the moral high ground to interrogate and bring lawbreakers to book.”

In line with his vision of cultivating a police force that upholds the rule of law, IGP Egbetokun issued a directive mandating that all police convoys, during routine and non-emergency movements, must adhere to traffic lights and other traffic rules. Leading by example, he pledged to personally abide by this directive. As the officers return to their respective bases, the IGP wished them a safe journey and assured them of his continuous support.

Reports indicate that the IGP also informed senior officers and commanders that they would be held accountable for any lapse in supervision resulting in an officer’s failure to comply with the directive. This measure underscores the commitment to ensure strict compliance with the newly issued order.
