Many Die As Mexican Church Collapses During Baptism

A church located in the northeastern coastal town of Ciudad Madero in the Tamaulipas state of Mexico collapsed on worshippers yesterday during a Baptimasal service.

No fewer than ten worshippers, including three children, reportedly died in the tragic incident, while dozens more persons sustained degrees of injuries as the roof of the church crashed down on them.

Reports revealed that military personnel have collaborated with emergency services using rescue dogs and earthmoving equipment to identify and dig out survivors from the ruins of the church.

“Unfortunately, 10 people are confirmed dead. Of these, five are women, two men and three children,” a statement credited to the Governor of Tamaulipas, Americo Villarreal, reads.

It was gathered that no fewer than 60 people were treated for injuries, with 23 still in hospital. According to Reuters, the death toll was not expected to rise beyond what was reported on Monday morning insinuating that all of the missing had been accounted for.

“Two have serious injuries, their lives may be in danger,” Villarreal said earlier.

Reacting, the bishop of the local diocese, Jose Armando Alvarez, said in a video posted on social media that “the roof of a church has collapsed during the celebration of the Eucharist”.
