In a remarkable display of interfaith harmony, the Youth Fellowship of the First Baptist Church Jos will face off against Nurudeen Muslim Society, a Muslim group, in a friendly football match to commemorate the church’s 113th anniversary.
“This football match is more than just a game; it’s a symbol of our commitment to peace, tolerance, and unity,” said Rev. Sunday Fabunmi, Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church Jos. “For decades, our church and My Muslim Society have coexisted peacefully, and this match will further strengthen our bond.”
The Church and Mosque share a common fence, and their harmonious relationship has been a beacon of hope in a state often plagued by religious tensions.
“We believe that sports can bridge the gap between different faiths and foster understanding,” said the Church Pastor.
“We’re excited to join our Muslim brothers in this friendly match, promoting peace and tolerance in our community.”
The anniversary celebration and football match aim to promote interfaith dialogue and cooperation, foster a spirit of unity and understanding, encourage peaceful coexistence among religious groups, and demonstrate the power of sports in building bridges.
The Youth Fellowship Leader, Bro. Seyi Mafolasire emphasized, “As young people, we’re committed to spreading love, acceptance, and peace. This match is a testament to our shared humanity and the possibility of harmonious coexistence.”
The football match is scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 13, 2024, at Baptist Science Grammar School, Bauchi Ring Road, Jos, at 3 pm. The event will be attended by community leaders, clergy, and members of both organizations.
“As we celebrate 113 years of God’s faithfulness, we’re reminded that our greatest strength lies in our ability to come together despite our differences,” The Church Secretary, Mr. Adefemi Olayinka, said. “May this match inspire others to emulate our example of peace and unity.”
This heartwarming initiative serves as a shining example of interfaith cooperation and peaceful coexistence in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the celebration service will be held at the Church auditorium on Sunday, October 13, 2024 at First Baptist Church, 43 Adebayo Street, Jos, Plateau State. The service will commence at 7:30am.
