The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Oyo State has claimed that it has effectively moved voters from the polling places with the highest voter turnout to 815 less populous polling places spread out over 28 local government areas of the State.
Dr. Rahmon Adeniran Tella, the honorable resident electoral commissioner in the state, revealed this while briefing the reporters on the Commission’s preparations for the upcoming general elections on Thursday.
According to Adeniran the move of voters from highly populated to lesser populated polling units was made in order to reach the threshold of 750 voters per polling unit, taking into account the polling units’ proximity to one another on election day, and the development will prevent the congestion that makes voting difficult on election day.
He added that polling units with the migrated voters had already been pasted in all the affected 28 local government areas comprising the 815 polling units for them to see and be informed ahead of polls adding that the exercise was also carried out in consultation with all the stateholders in the electioneering process
“Closely related in the distribution of voters is the identification of polling units which was discovered in the in the recently conducted mock accreditation exercise carried out in the selected LGAs using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), it is indeed clear that some voters could not easily identify their polling units, this should not happen on election day , hence the pasting of affected polling units with migrated voters.”he said
While calling on eligible voters to come out to cast their votes with their permanent voters card on election days, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state said the Commission will soon come up with an update on the total number of registered voters for the coming elections including the total number of collected and uncollected PVCs in the state .
