The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) are exploring a potential collaboration on a specialized SIM card initiative for students, aimed at enhancing the security and efficiency of the admission process.

According to Professor Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of JAMB, the candidates’ registered telephone numbers are crucial for sensitive operations, and the specialized SIM card will play a vital role in the admission process. Candidates will be able to accept or reject admission offers via their dedicated telephone line or through fingerprint verification at authorized CBT centers or JAMB offices. This new process is designed to enhance the security and integrity of the admission process, while also protecting candidates’ personal information.

The importance of the candidates’ registered telephone (SIM) has increased significantly with the introduction of this method, as it is now essential for conducting sensitive operations such as:

– Receiving admission offers and acceptance/rejection notifications
– Verifying candidates’ identities and personal information
– Conducting secure transactions and payments
– Accessing important updates and information from JAMB and educational institutions

JAMB and NCC are currently in negotiations to establish dedicated SIMs for students with restricted functionalities, which will further enhance the security and efficiency of the admission process. These specialized SIMs will have limited capabilities, ensuring that they are used solely for educational purposes and minimizing the risk of unauthorized use.

In a related development, JAMB released the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination results, which showed that 77% of the 1,842,464 candidates scored below 200. This highlights the need for a more efficient and secure admission process, which the specialized SIM card initiative aims to address.
