The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun State, Mutiu Agboke, has reiterated the crucial role of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) in promoting integrity in Nigeria’s electoral processes.
ADULAWO News reports that Agboke while speaking with the leadership of Osun Online Publishers Association in a visit to his office on Thursday, Agboke emphasized that BVAS remains a vital component in maintaining sanity in elections.
While acknowledging that vote buying and election violence persist as ongoing challenges, Agboke stressed the need for continuous voter education and engagement to address these issues. “We must continue to educate the public to understand the importance of rejecting vote buying and condemning election violence,” he said. “We need to appeal to their conscience and encourage them to make informed decisions.”
Agboke announced plans to engage with media houses and political parties to address issues affecting the electoral process. He emphasized the importance of political parties educating their members during ward meetings, congresses, and rallies. Additionally, he stressed the need for adherence to INEC guidelines and building confidence through transparent technology implementation.
“We will not rest on our oars,” Agboke assured. “We will continue to work on improving the BVAS and engaging the public to ensure the integrity of our electoral process.”
On his part, the chairman of the association, Mukthar Ajelogbon, commended the Osun REC and the management members for their warm reception, openness, and commitment to ensuring the integrity of the electoral process in Osun State.
He said that “the association is impressed with the efforts of the Osun REC in ensuring that the electoral process is free, fair, and credible, and we appreciate the REC’s willingness to engage with stakeholders and address concerns in a transparent and professional manner.”
