Tragedy struck on Sunday in Yar’Gwanda Village, Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State, as three men lost their lives while attempting to recover a cellphone from a pit toilet. The victims were identified as 60-year-old Malam Danjuma, popularly known as Black, his son Ibrahim, 35, and Aminu Gaye, also 35.
According to the Kano Fire Service spokesperson, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, the tragedy occurred when Danjuma tried to retrieve a cellphone that had fallen into the pit toilet and got trapped. His son Ibrahim then entered the toilet to save his father but also got trapped. Two others, Gaye and Abba Alasan, 28, entered the toilet to rescue the two men but also became trapped.
The Kano Fire Service received an emergency call from Tsanyawa Fire Station at around 11:00 a.m. and immediately sent a rescue team to the scene. The team arrived at 11:15 a.m. and found the four men trapped inside the pit toilet.
The first three victims were rescued unconscious, while Alasan was rescued alive. All four victims were handed over to the Superintendent of Police, Iro Lado, at the Tsanyawa police division, who then conveyed them to Bichi Special Hospital for medical attention. Unfortunately, doctors on duty confirmed that three of the victims had died, while Alasan survived.
The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers of entering pit toilets and the importance of prioritizing safety in such situations. The Kano Fire Service has urged citizens to exercise caution and seek help from professionals in such situations.
