Fuel Price Hike: UI Directs Staff To Work Three Days Weekly

Amid the economic challenges faced by Nigerians following the removal of fuel subsidy, resulting in increased prices of goods and services, the University of Ibadan (UI) has taken a proactive step by making adjustments to its schedule.

ADULAWO NEWS reports that the institution aims to alleviate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal on its staff members.

This was revealed in a special release, numbered 4642 and dated August 14, 2023, was issued, bearing the signature of the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, G.O. Saliu.

The University administration acknowledged the hardship faced by individuals who rely on their salaries to commute to work, particularly given the rising costs of transportation and living expenses.

To address this situation, the UI management meticulously evaluated the circumstances and arrived at the decision to implement a temporary work schedule adjustment for its staff members.

ADULAWO NEWS reports that the decision was endorsed by the university’s Senate during a meeting held on August 3, 2023.

The newly adopted schedule, effective from 14th August, aims to provide some relief to the staff members grappling with the impact of the fuel subsidy removal.

It is important to note that personnel on essential duties remain unaffected by this schedule adjustment.

In its communication, the university administration emphasized the significance of maintaining commitment, open dialogue, and cooperation among staff members to ensure a smooth workflow.

The statement further encouraged flexibility, including the option to work from home when necessary.

Deans, directors, heads of departments, and units were also urged to actively contribute to the successful implementation of this intervention.

The statement reads, The astronomical increase in the fuel pump price occasioned by the removal of subsidy by the Federal Government has imposed huge economic difficulties on the generality of Nigerians.

Salary earners who have to commute to work every working day are faced with an aggravation of the condition, given the attendant hike in the transport fare and cost of living.

“After careful consideration of the situation, the University Management recommended a temporary work schedule adjustment for members of staff, which the Senate at its meeting on Thursday, August 3, 2023, considered and approved.

Accordingly, members of staff are now expected to work on-site for three (3) days in rotation per week, with effect from Monday, August 14, 2023. It should, however, be noted that those on essential duties are exempt from this adjustment.

“It should be further noted that Management will review the arrangement as the situation improves. Meanwhile, members of staff are to maintain commitment, open communication, and cooperation towards ensuring a free workflow, including working from home where and when necessary.

In light of the foregoing, Management seeks the understanding of all Deans, Directors, Heads of departments, and Units towards a smooth implementation of the intervention.”
